I LOVE that area of the country! I’m applying to grad schools in Arizona, Nevada, Montana and Wyoming because I love the desert aesthetic so much.

I think you’d like Sedona then. Very well to do area, though it seems to be tough to get too from the north. I had to take a narrow, busy road with lots of switchback before I finally reached the town. This region I’m in probably has the best parts of Arizona too, lots of forests and green age within driving distance as well if you start to get sick of the desert.

I’ve driven the entire state of Wyoming, and my lord, there is almost NOTHING there. Not really much scenery in terms of desert aesthetics, it’s mostly rolling prairie land until you get close to the Big Horn mountains. (Or was it Little Horn?) The lack of population will also impact the quality of the school, so that’s something to keep in mind as well.

Believe it or not I think Utah wins for having some of the most colorful desert sceneries I have EVER seen. Too bad the Mormons ruined it. :-X
